   I am working on trying to automate the regression testing of a complex CRM system that receives Business 2 Business XML messages.

   There are a number of message types but basically relate to the receipt and then maintenance of orders - there are a huge number of permutations for the orders (wherein lies the complexity).

   Has anyone utilised one of the usual test tools to achieve this (QARun, WinRunner, Robot etc), I would like to use them if possible as the other method of order entry is through PeopleSoft CRM system and I would like to use the same tool for both order entry methods - simplifying the planning, execution and reporting.

   So if anyone has any war stories about testing a similar message based entry process (things to do, things not to do, tools that worked, tools that failed etc) I would be extremely keen to hear them.

   How does it "receive Business 2 Business XML messages". What protocol is used and how is communication done?

   the messages are received/sent via HTTP or HTTPS (depending on the message type and the sender) through a proxy server

   For the sending/messaging portion of the process, there are several tools for testing such web services. You want something that works at the protocol level, so the GUI layer type tools you mentioned (WinRunner, Robot, etc) will not be useful unless you were to developer a GUI test harness which you then used the tools to drive (which would be quite a waste).

   Most load testing tools for web applications work at the HTTP level (and can be rigged to do functional verification), so you may want to look at some of those. I also have a free tool you can have a look at (www.webinject.org) that is designed for testing such HTTP services.
