   Hi Friends,

   I have gone thru many of the posts on this site. Thanks for the wonderful information. I came to know about many of the web automate tools after reading these posts. But I need your suggestions for an Automated Tool for our organization.

   The main problem we are facing and want to go for Automate testing is that whenever we implement new feature on our site the present functionality breaks with the changes so we need to do a complete functionality testing as we move the changes to our production site and manually its not possible to do a complete testing on daily basis. So we need a best tool for our site.

   Technologies we are using:

   1. PHP, MySQL using DRUPAL framework
   2. Web server - Apache
   3. Operating system - LINUX

   Testing we wish to perform: Functional and Performance [Basically we need to check login process, large Data postings like bogs, Questions, comments, and different kind of forms]

   Budget: Budget is not a problem.

   May I know which automation tool will be best suited for testing the website under above requirements.

   For testing the functionality of your application (as described in your post) you could use our tool web2test. But note: Performance (at least at http protocol level) is not supported. I can't tell you if it is the best tool for your website but you can try it on your own and see if it fits your needs. On our homepage we offer a free trial version including support.

   When you ask "which automation tool will be best suited", you can only get personal opinions from us. And none of us has enough knowledge about your individual situation to decide what "best" means for you. Only you can do that.

   Many of the tools you see represented here at SQAForums can be used to do that sort of testing.

   Which have you tried so far?

   I use WinTask and OpenSTA.

   Well, my opinion is to use TestPlan. It is built for web application testing and includes the performance testing which you need -- by default the timing of everything is measured.

   I'm more than happy to answer any questions with it, or help you get up and running.

   Seems like what your testing seems pretty standard. If your page had AJAX, or used browser plugins, then that can affect the range of tools you can use. I think you can pretty much use almost anything if it's just straight http.

   If you're willing to get your hands dirty with scripting code, my recommendations are:

   If you don't have any AJAX or browser plugins used, I recommend Canoo Webtest. It runs on the Java platform so you can run it on your linux machines, and since it does not render the webpages (just makes a bunch of http requests and using xpath to reference things) it runs amazingly fast. If you do have AJAX, you might want to go with a commercial tool or Selenium. If you do have plugins, you're probably better off with a commercial tool that supports that particular plugin.

   For load testing, I'd say Grinder is a good open source load tool. It has a basic recording tool that can record your http requests, and you can play them back using a grid to generate tons of load and get a report on the transactions per minute. I believe this tool is cross platform as well.
